Special Olympics

2019

For those who may not know what the Special Olympics is, it is the world’s largest sports organisation for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

This year the Special Olympics World Games is being held in Abu Dhabi – right now! Australia is represented by 105 athletes. These athletes will compete across 11 sports. These are: athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, equestrian, football, golf, gymnastics, sailing, swimming and tennis.

The Special Olympics would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the vision of Eunice Kennedy Shriver. In 1962, this forward-thinking woman, invited a group of young people with intellectual disabilities to a summer camp – in her very own backyard. It was only 6 short years later the International Special Olympics Games was born! The year was 1968 and the Games were held in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Today Special Olympics is a global movement. Almost 5 million athletes take part from 169 countries in over 30 sports.
